Director Venu Sriram made his debut in 2011 with ‘Oh My Friend’ and he bagged the golden opportunity to direct Powerstar Pawan Kalyan in Vakeel Saab which is just his third film. The ‘MCA’ director is fortunate to get the opportunity to work with such a big star in the remake of ‘Pink’. Dil Raju who produced MCA is also co-producing the courtroom drama under the Sri Venkateswara Creations banner.
It is always special to direct Pawan Kalyan as I adore him a lot. Many asked me whether I faced any pressure to work with him. But I enjoyed the process without feeling pressurised at any moment and it remains special for me all my life.
We kept the soul of the original intact and only changed the narration a bit to suit the image of Pawan Kalyan. Mainly it is a courtroom drama and we showed that in the trailer itself. The main concept of women’s consent in Amitabh’s Pink is adopted as it is.
I ended up staying at home for about seven years after my first film ‘Oh My Friend’ didn’t fare well at the box-office. However, my second film MCA did well and the experience of both these films came in handy while making ‘Vakeel Saab’.
Vakeel Saab did not happen in a day. Ten years of the journey was there behind getting this opportunity. Moreover, my passion for cinema is pushing me to sustain such long.
It was actually a dream to direct Pawan Kalyan. His fans might treat him like a God but he remains down to earth. I was in a blissful state while shooting with Pawan and an involuntary smile always used to surface on my face each time he entered the sets.
Initially, I faced a lot of criticism on social media when the movie was announced. Several raised their doubts about choosing me as a director and also the story. All their apprehensions were shackled once the trailer was released.
We mulled over three titles ‘Maguvaa Lokaniki Telusaa Nee Viluva’, ‘Lawyer Saab’ and ‘Vakeel Sab’. Finally, we locked the present title. However, Pawan’s walking still in the title was designed after a fan clicked photo from the sets went viral.
I can’t talk much about my next project as my complete focus is right now on Vakeel Saab. But I can say that the ‘Icon’ movie with Allu Arjun is on the cards.
