Born on March 31 1979, star director Harish Shankar is celebrating his birthday today and the netizens are flooding social media with wishes. After assisting directors like Puri Jagannadh and Ram Gopal Varma, Harish made his debut as a director in 2006 with Ravi Teja’s Shock. However, success eluded him initially and it took six long years to bounce back in a big way with Pawan Kalyan’s ‘Gabbar Singh’ in 2012. Since then, he is going great guns being one of the biggest mainstream filmmakers of Tollywood.

Harish completed his MBA before making his entry into films. Being the son of a Telugu teacher, young Harish got to read loads of Telugu literature and also watched lots of movies with the support of his father. Besides, he started acting in plays during his Intermediate days by joining Sita Nilayam and Lalita Kalamandir drama companies.

Moreover, he even tried to join the National School of Drama and was also interviewed by Girish Karnad and Charu Haasan. However, the veterans advised Harish to try in films as they observed the suitable talent for the silver screen in him.

So, he tried for the opportunities in films and worked as a writer as well as an assistant for Tarun’s ‘Ninne Ishtapaddanu’. Later, he worked for ‘Veede’ and ‘Naa Autograph’ with the support of Kona Venkat. In this process, Harish Shankar caught the eye of RGV and bagged the opportunity to direct ‘Shock’. But his happiness was short-lived as the debut movie bombed at the box office.

In the process, Shankar also lost an opportunity to direct MS Raju’s film. Meanwhile, he extended writing support to Puri’s films ‘Chirutha’ and ‘Bujjigadu’. Finally, his fate turned with the success of ‘Mirapakay’ and he became a star director with the stupendous blockbuster ‘Gabbar Singh’.

Now, Harish Shankar is working for Pawan’s film under the Mythri Movie Makers banner and this Pan India film will soon go on to the sets. In his 16 years career, the young and dynamic Harish Shankar rose like a phoenix from being a writer to a star director and helmed seven films.
